The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) began in 1948, with free medicines for pensioners and a list of 139 life-saving and disease preventing medicines free of charge for others in the community. This was the culmination work done by then Curtin’s Labor Government. By the 1960’s it had grown into a more comprehensive scheme of subsidised drugs for many Australian.

In our community, doctors are in a group of people that are held up to a different standard than the rest of the community. I realised that a few years ago when I posted to Facebook a picture of myself holding up a dead feral cat that I had dispatched with an arrow. Someone commented “Doctors should not be killing animals” And I thought I was doing the environment a favour by taking a predator of native animals out of the picture.

I had tried to pull off a toenail without anaesthetic on someone’s Grandma. I thought she was being overly whingy putting in the block.
